Philosophy

What do these terms mean in naturopathic medicine?

Functional Medicine - a system of medicine which addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach. Functional medicine stems from naturopathic medicine (1).

Homeopathy - A basic belief behind homeopathy is “like cures like.” In other words, something that brings on symptoms in a healthy person can -- in a very small dose -- treat an illness with similar symptoms. This is meant to trigger the body’s natural defenses.

Naturopathic Medicine - is a distinct health care profession that combines the wisdom of nature with the rigors of modern science. Naturopathic doctors are trained as primary care providers who diagnose, treat and manage patients with acute and chronic conditions, while addressing disease and dysfunction at the level of body, mind and spirit (2).

Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) - developed by Dr. Scott Walker, DC. NET is a mind-body technique that uses a method of finding and removing neurological imbalances related to physiology of unresolved stress patterns (3).

Prolotherapy - injection treatment used to relieve joint and muscle pain.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy  - uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints (4).

Peptides - strings of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. They are used to increase muscle, help with fat loss, anti-aging, and assist with wound healing, among others.

Regenerative injections - injection of a substance into the tissues or joint space to promote healing (5).

Stem cells - form of regenerative medicine that uses stem cells to support the body's healing abilities in a variety of health issues (6).

Testosterone Replacement Therapy - testosterone in the form of pellets, patches, creams, or gels to increase low testosterone.
